Mammalian stem cell niches. a Interfollicular epidermis. Progenitor cells ( green) reside in the basal layer, attached to the basement membrane. b Intestinal epithelium. Stem cell reside in the crypt compartment and Paneth cells serve as part of their physical niche. c Neural stem cell niche. Neural stem cells, or Type B cells ( green), are in contact with ependymal cells ( blue) that line the lateral ventricles.
