Participants Diagnosis: Major depressive disorder. RDC, ICD‐9. 
 Exclusion criteria: seasonal depression, ophthalmological or oculomotor disorder, acute suicidality, IQ lower than 90.

 Age: mean 54.2 years. 
 Sex: F 34, M 8. 
 Setting: inpatients.
Interventions 1. Bright white light (2500 lux 7‐9 AM for 2 hours). N = 22. 
 2. Dim red light (50 lux 7‐9 AM for 2 hours). N = 20. 
 Device: light box.
Outcomes Mental state (HDRS, D‐S, D‐S', VAS, AMDP). 
 Adverse effects (C‐ L).
