Microglial cells express high levels of mRNA for IL-4, Ym1, and FIZZ1 in the CNS. Total CNS mononuclear cells were isolated from unmanipulated mice and from BM chimeras 10 d after EAE induction and were sorted into resting and activated microglial cells and peripheral infiltrating macrophages. A–C, IL-4 (A), Ym1 (B), and FIZZ1 (C) expression was analyzed by real-time RT-PCR. Quantitative RT-PCR results are presented as a ratio of the number of specific copies to the number of GAPDH copies. The data are representative of either three separate experiments (A, B) or a single experiment (C) with pooled cells from 5–10 mice used for each analysis and are shown as the mean ± SD of triplicates.
