The induction levels of hsp70 correlate with expression levels of mutant htt in cerebellar neurons. Normal and mutant polyQ disease proteins were expressed in cerebellar neurons by adenovirus vectors. Four days after infection, neurons were stained with the CAG53b antibody (Scherzinger et al., 1997) that detects both Atx-1 and htt (Tagawa et al., 2004). Neurons expressing mutant htt at high levels showed a remarkable increase of hsp70. The expression levels of htt and Atx-1 are shown in supplemental Figures 1 and 2 (available at www.jneurosci.org as supplemental material).
