Linear density is the total number of postsynaptic gold particles in a sample per micrometer of summed postsynaptic membrane. n is the number of analyzed synapses. In experiments 1 and 3, control synapses were sampled in the contralateral dorsal horn, and in experiment 2, a dorsal horn section from an unstimulated animal was used as control.
