Photomicrographs illustrating five frontal levels through the right olfactory bulb of three experimental rats. Numbers on the bottom are millimeters from the rostral aspect of the accessory olfactory bulb. The animal number and the percentage of the mitral cell layer removed are given on the left. The relatively superficial lesion of the dorsal bulb in R53 is characteristic of rats in the small lesion group. Lesions in R58 from the medium lesion group are deeper and destroy more of the mitral cell layer. The large lesions in rat R51 are representative of those in the large lesion group (see Results). Dorsal is to the top, and medial is to the right in each section.
