Effective linearity of the response of an AN fiber (CF of 580 Hz) to a multicomponent stimulus. The central component (566 Hz) of a seven-component zwuis stimulus was varied while the surrounding components (470–680 Hz) were kept at a fixed level of 40 dB SPL. The power of the 566 Hz component in the PSTH spectrum, expressed relative to the total power of the surrounding response components, is plotted against the SPL of the 566 Hz component in the stimulus (filled circles). The stimulus–response relationship is linear over a range of 45 dB (solid line).
