Maximal intensity projections of 3D X-ray histology data. Control tissue (left side) and tissue from a patient with interstitial lung disease [idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF); right side]. Snapshots of 3D volumes are shown as maximum intensity projections (MIPs). MIP rendering consists of projecting the pixels with the highest X-ray attenuation, which helps to discern denser features, such as the vascular network, from the surrounding tissue, without the need of data segmentation. MIPs illustrate a clear difference between the vascular network in control tissue (left side) and ablated vascular structures observed for the IPF lung tissue (right side). Samples were of equivalent size, and identical threshold parameters were applied for both samples. Scale bars = 2 mm.
