Incidence of the histological subtypes of lung cancer. Lung cancer is subdivided into various histological subtypes. The main distinction is between small cell lung cancer (15%) and non-small cell lung cancer (85%). Non-small cell lung cancer further subdivides into three major histological subtypes, namely adenocarcinoma (40%), squamous cell carcinoma (25–30%), and large cell carcinoma (15%).
