The natural site of H. pylori infection is the stomach. Thus, the question arises how and when in the process from a healthy gut epithelium to CRC H. pylori might contribute to carcinogenesis. Besides a potential direct effect, H. pylori might exert indirect effects through enabling other bacteria to colonize/infect the colorectal epithelium and/or by causing systemic pro-inflammatory, hormonal, or metabolic changes.
