Melting and resolidification of Ni. Diffraction profiles taken from Ni particles on a carbon grid. The vanishing of the diffraction peaks from Ni shows the immediate melting of the particles within a few ns after the laser pulse. Each curve is the sum of 100 single-shot diffraction patterns at the same delay. The uppermost curve was taken 20 ns before the heating. The two prominent diffraction peaks at low diffraction angles are the graphite rings from the slightly graphitized carbon grid
