Overhead (left) and side (right) view of the startle chamber. Hens were individually placed on the aluminum force plate in the dark chamber, and confined with wire fencing. Flashes were mounted on the chamber ceiling; when they discharged, their light was reflected off the mirrors on the chamber floor. The force plate recorded forces along x, y and z-axes.
