Methodological approach to fully corroborate homology. Each triangle represents one of the three hierarchical levels, respectively the organism level, the population level, and the species level. Tests exist at each hierarchical level (a–c) that reduce the initial number of possible homology hypotheses to a limited set of corroborated hypotheses at each hierarchical level. The area of each triangle reflects the relative number of homology hypotheses before (full area) and after the tests (grey shades area). Corroboration at more than one level (d–f) increases confidence for the initial homology hypothesis. When the three levels have been tested (g), the initial homology hypothesis is fully corroborated.
