GC chromatogram of (A) V. erubescens; (B) R. arboreum; (C) E. japonica; (D) S. lucida; (E) S. pyrifolia. The GC-MS analysis revealed quite distinct yet overlapping phytochemical profiles comprising of several discrete volatile constituents. A total of 38, 48, 38, 39 and 49 compounds were identified in V. erubescens, R. arboreum, E. japonica, S. lucida and S. pyrifolia, respectively (Supplementary data). However, a total of 115 individual compounds were identified in the five plants.
