A, B, Mutual information per spike (A) or per unit of time (B) for a static synapse for a range of Pr values shown (black traces) and the average cumulative mutual information Icumulative for a dynamic synapse with a basal Pr = 0.2 (red traces). Icumulative was determined for 100-spike-long trains at each rate (see Materials and Methods for details). Note that in the case of a static, constant Pr synapse, mutual information and Icumulative are exactly the same since they are time independent. The presence of STP increases information transferred by the dynamic synapse in a wide frequency range above that of a static synapse with the same basal release probability.
