Proliferation of oligodendroglial subpopulations vulnerable to secondary degeneration in vivo. Oligodendroglia of varying maturity were identified with antibodies to NG2/olig2 (OPCs), O4 (premyelinating oligodendrocytes), and CC1 (mature oligodendrocytes). Proliferating subpopulations were distinguished by EdU+ labeling and were observed at varying time points after injury in (a) OPCs, (b) O4s, and (c) CC1+ cells. a–c, Quantification of the mean densities ± SEM of OPCs, O4, and CC1+ cells, respectively.
