Responses to the 8 items on the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-8) were used to define “major depression” and “other depression,” according to criteria from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed. (DSM-IV-TR). “Major depression” was defined as having at least 5 symptoms of depression, whereas “other depression” was defined as having 2–4 symptoms of depression. Those who had major or other depression were categorized as “Depressed.”
