Figure 5

Purifying meteorite extracts by thin layer chromatography. Approximately 0.5–1 mg of Murray and Murchison meteorite samples dissolved in chloroform was spotted at the origin of silica gel TLC plates, then developed with 4:1 hexane:diethyl ether and chloroform in the x and y dimensions respectively (black arrows). (A) Shows the Murchison plate exposed to short wave UV light (254 nm), and (B) shows the same plate exposed to long wave UV light that excited fluorescence (~360 nm). The circled area (white arrows) was scraped and eluted for analysis by mass spectrometry. (C) Shows the Murray plate exposed to short wave UV light, and (D) shows the same plate exposed to long wave UV light.
