Pneumococcal vaccines reduce prevalence of vaccine serotypes (teal). Reductions in vaccine serotypes cause propagation of nonvaccine serotypes (pink and purple) and nonencapsulated pneumococci (blue and green). Antibiotic selective forces drive the outgrowth of antibiotic-resistant NESp (blue) and nonvaccine serotypes (pink).
