Ventricular function curves illustrate the nonlinear relationship between cardiac output and left ventricular preload. In heart failure, cardiac output (CO) is decreased. Ventricular assist devices (VADs) are implanted to boost CO. Ideally, they would also restore the nonlinear CO response to ventricular preload.
