Inflammatory proteins produced mainly by chondrocytes, synovial fibroblasts, and macrophages induce the excess production of tissue-degrading enzymes, such as matrix metalloproteinases. Products of cartilage breakdown are phagocytosed by the synovial cells triggering the release of even more proinflammatory proteins.
