A pulse of 25 mM KCl was applied as described under Methods; the horizontal bar indicates when cells were incubated with the purified peptide. The first three cells (from top) show a change in response upon depolarization with KCl. The fourth trace shows a cell that directly increased cytosolic Ca⁺⁺ when the peptide was added, even without KCl depolarization (approximately 26% of neurons responded in this manner) and the bottom trace shows a cell that did not respond (approximately 15% of DRG neurons were non-responsive to the peptide).
