Neonatal infection leads to exaggerated IL-1β responses to LPS in the brains of adult rats. Adult rats treated on P4 with PBS (black bars) or E. coli (white bars) were injected with saline (SAL) or LPS as adults, and brains were collected 1–24 h later. Data for hippocampus (a), parietal cortex (b), prefrontal cortex (c), hypothalamus (d), and pituitary (e) are presented as mean ± SEM picograms per 100μg of protein. a, IL-1β was higher in hippocampus 1 and 1.5 h after LPS in rats infected with E. coli as neonates compared with controls. b, IL-1β was higher in parietal cortex 1, 4, and 8 h after LPS in rats infected with E. coli as neonates; *p < 0.05 for all. There were no significant differences in other brain regions.
