In situ hybridization analysis of photoreceptor differentiation during regeneration of the postmetamorphic winter flounder retina. The sections, which were sequentially collected from the same retina 35 d after lesion, were screened with antisense cRNA probes against RH2, SWS2, LWS, or RH1, as indicated. The distance from the lesion edge to the nearest labeled cone or rod is indicated by the blue or red arrow, respectively. An equivalent blue arrow is present for the RH2, SWS2, and LWS panels and is superimposed on the RH1 panel for direct comparison with the red arrow. The length of the red arrow exceeds that of the superimposed blue arrow (note also the RH1-free region of ONL nearest to the lesion edge), consistent with a cone-to-rod differentiation sequence during postmetamorphic retinal regeneration (Fig. 7) (see Results). The scale bar applies to all panels.
