Effect of a Th1/17 environment on the proinflammatory response of primary AECs to virus-like/bacterial stimuli. AECs from control subjects (n = 7) were cultured in the absence or presence of Th1/17 cytokines, followed by the stimulation with LPS, imiquimod, or poly I:C. Gene expression data (relative to HPRT) were transformed and analyzed by 2-way ANOVA. Graphs show fold change relative to unstimulated cells in corresponding group (media or Th1/17 environment). The comparison of fold change in cytokine response between the baseline and the Th1/17-biased environment is summarized in Table 4. Significant differences relative to unstimulated cells are shown as p < 0.05, ∗∗p < 0.01, and ∗∗∗p < 0.001. Unstim: unstimulated; Imiq: imiquimod.
