Determination of global collagen gel deformation by cardiac fibroblasts. Polystyrene beads were added to fibroblasts populated collagen gels prior to polymerization and imaged at t0 (immediately after polymerization) or 24 h later. There is virtually no displacement of beads in constrained gels after 24 h (top right) compared to the significant displacement of beads observed in the unconstrained gel (bottom right)
