Proposed mechanism for the absorption of gemcitabine in small intestine. The apical uptake of gemcitabine (i.e., from lumen to enterocytes) is mediated by CNTs and ENTs, whereas the basolateral efflux of gemcitabine and/or gemcitabine metabolites (i.e., from enterocytes to portal venous blood) is mediated by ENTs.
