Index

Increasing numbers of patients are in search of cosmetic improvements to their appearance. Often, these patients are also interested in minimally invasive techniques that give quick results with minimal down time. The advent of neurotoxins and fillers addresses these patient issues perfectly, and cosmetic physicians must become familiar with these techniques and their complications. This text has a lengthy list of specific injection techniques for almost all cosmetic facial problems that can be addressed by neurotoxin or filler.

The text is divided into seven sections. The first two sections are introductory to injectables and neurotoxins. The third section contains 28 chapters and is devoted entirely to reviewing the techniques for neurotoxin injection. Each chapter reviews a different technique from injecting glabellar frown lines and profusely sweating hands to injections for migraine. The fourth section is an introduction to fillers, followed by section five which has 31 chapters on techniques of filler injection for nasolabial folds and cheekbone augmentation to acne scar management. Section six reviews fat-dissolving injections for submetal fat, and section seven is an appendix that includes useful informed consent samples.

Each injection-specific chapter opens with a rating scale for each technique. Difficulty, patient satisfaction and risk are each scored which is a great tool to help beginner injectors better understand what to expect. Next, each chapter has sections on the indications and anatomic considerations, followed by the injection technique itself. The chapter continues with precautions, post-injection instructions, and risks. Each chapter concludes with “pearls of injection” to give some additional expert tips for the reader. A short list of additional reading provides a few salient references.

Each chapter contains clear schematic drawings to serve as a “road map” for injection locations, and many chapters also contain clinical photos of specific problem areas. These schematics and photos are all clear and easy to understand. The text also comes with access to 110 videos that demonstrate the various injection techniques.

This text is an excellent guide to the techniques of neurotoxin and filler injections. The instructions on each technique are easy to understand and the associated schematics are simple and illustrative. This text will be a great teaching tool for novices and a good reference for more advanced injectors.
