Hypoglycemic damage to dentate granule and cortical neurons is reduced by 3-AB. A, Photomicrographs of dentate granule (DG) cell and perirhinal cortex (Ctx) fields from rats subjected to 30 min of isoelectric hypoglycemia show numerous degenerating (dead) neurons, as evidenced by shrunken cell bodies stained dark red. Rats treated with 30 mg/kg of the PARP inhibitor 3-AB at the time of glucose correction sustained less neuronal death in both the dentate granule cell area (top panels) and cortex (bottom panels).
