Quantification of glial cells in the dentate gyrus of the hippocampus after pneumococcal meningitis. GFAP- and Iba-1-immunoreactive cells were quantified per mm2 area of the subgranular and granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus (see results) of infected and healthy CRAMP-KO and -WT mice 36 h after induction of meningitis. Immunoreactive cells were normalized to noninfected controls and fold increases are presented in the graph (a, c). Data from 4 mice/group are presented as medians with ranges/mm2. Density of GFAP (b)- and Iba-1 (d)-immunoreactive cells within the subgranular and granule cell layer of the dentate gyrus of infected CRAMP-KO mice were normalized to infected -WT mice. Previously, basal expression of astrocytes or microglial cells of the uninfected mice was subtracted. Comparison revealed significantly more activated microglia in CRAMP-KO mice in pneumococcal meningitis (* p < 0.05, ** p = 0.0061, infected vs. noninfected mice, Mann-Whitney U test).
