Cryo-electron micrographs of stationary-phase cells of strain Hel3_A1_48 show a large periplasm (A, E), a protrusion of the cytoplasm (B), peptidoglycan and a fuzzy OM on the outside (C), and tubular appendages (D, E). Inner and outer membranes (IM and OM) as well as peptidoglycan (PG) and the fuzzy OM surface layer (FL) are indicated.
