The proposed model of the replacement of the CBC by eIF4E. STAU1 serves as a positive regulator of the replacement by facilitating an interaction between the CBC–IMPα complex and IMPβ. Under stress conditions, UPF1 becomes hyperphosphorylated and the replacement is inhibited via increased association between STAU1 and hyperphosphorylated UPF1.
