Thyroid hormones and their derivatives can restore DA neurons from neurotoxic damage. (A) Timeline of the experimental protocol of the dopaminergic neuron recovery test. (B) After a neurotoxic insult (6-OHDA for 18 h or H2O2 for 3 h) was administered to Nurr1-Mash1-overexpressing rat NPCs, cells were treated with thyroid hormones or their derivatives throughout the differentiation period. Under conditions of neurotoxic damage, the thyroid hormones and their derivatives significantly increased the number of TH+ neurons. (C) Rat VM NPCs and (D) human ESC-derived NPCs were incubated with 6-OHDA (18 h) and subsequently incubated with the thyroid hormone derivatives for 14 days after differentiation. The number of TH+ neurons increased following treatment with the thyroid hormone derivatives. *p < 0.05, **p < 0.01. Scale bar, 20 μm. The error bars are the S.E. from two independent experiments.
