Impact of hcp and hcp1 on crypt cooccupancy. Shown are the numbers of crypts per squid that exhibit both CFP and YFP fluorescence. Squid were exposed to an inoculum in which CFP-labeled ES114 and the indicated FQ-A001-derived strain labeled with YFP (WT, FQ-A001; vasA2, ANS2098; Δhcp Δhcp1, NPW58) were mixed evenly. Twenty-six to 28 animals were used in each group. A Kruskal-Wallis test determined significant differences among group medians (P = 0.0097; H = 9.269). Dunn’s post hoc test was performed for statistical comparison of the median of each group to that of the WT group, with P values adjusted for multiple comparisons (**, P < 0.01; *, P < 0.05).
