Fluorescent indicator displacement assay to detect RNA:small molecule interactions. In this example, fluorescence is observed when the indicator is bound to the RNA receptor. As the indicator is increasingly displaced by a small molecule (SM) analyte, the fluorescence decreases. Conversely, displacement of an indicator whose fluorescence is quenched when bound to the RNA receptor will result in an increase in fluorescence.
