SFN and PEITC modulate synthesis of stable RNA (A) and DNA (B) in clinical isolates of E. coli 6424, K. pneumoniae 1077, S. aureus 6285 and E. faecalis 773 as well as S. epidermidis ATCC12228. Bacteria were grown in a minimal medium at 37 °C, and left untreated (none) or were exposed to ITCs (added at time zero to a final concentration of ¼ MIC). [3H]uridine (A) or [3H]thymidine (B) was added to 5 μCi, and incorporation into TCA-precipitable material was measured. The results presented are mean values from 3 independent experiments with error bars indicating SD (error bars are not shown when they are smaller than the symbols). The statistical significance of differences between controls and bacteria treated for 50– 60  min with ITC was determined by student t-test, and asterisks indicate significant differences: **P < 0.01; ***P < 0.001.
