Photomicrographs of sections of gastrocnemius muscles from ALS mice at 110 d of age. a, Wild-type mouse. Note that large groups of angulated and atrophic muscle fibers were observed in control ALS mice (b), suggesting severe neurogenic atrophy in these mice. However, AAV-GDNF vector treatment markedly attenuated this denervation atrophy (c), consistent with a greater fiber area and a decreased shift in fiber size toward smaller ones (d) compared with in control ALS mice.
