Rostrocaudal gradients of positive-to-negative valence can be observed for all behaviors in medial shell. Several far rostral muscimol microinjections produced positively valenced effects, and caudal microinjections reliably produced negative effects, whereas intermediate sites produced mixed positive effects (eating behavior) and negative effects (conditioned place avoidance and taste aversion).
