Interactions between antidepressants and antipsychotics in induction of extrapyramidal side effects (EPS). Bradykinesia was estimated by the pole test as described in Figure 6 legend. Although low dose (0.3 mg/kg) of haloperidol showed only weak effects in the pole test, combined treatment with selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, fluoxetine and paroxetine, markedly potentiated haloperidol-induced bradykinesia in a synergistic manner. By contrast, the tetracyclic antidepressant mirtazapine, which possesses α2, 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 antagonistic actions, reduced bradykinesia induced by a moderate dose (0.5 mg/kg) of haloperidol. *P<0.05, **P,0.01; Significantly different from the control values.
