Inclusion criteria: scheduled for arterial vascular surgery, including AAA repair, abdominal aortic stenosis surgery, lower limb arterial reconstruction or carotid artery stenosis repair
Exclusion criteria: active bleeding; untreated left main disease; active cardiac condition; preoperative positive troponin T; contraindication to esmolol use; previous allergy or intolerance to esmolol; cancer with life expectancy < 6 months; excessive alcohol use; pregnancy or planning to become pregnant; failure to provide informed consent; failure to monitor HR with continuous 12‐lead ECG because of surgery or baseline ECG abnormalities
