Experiment 4: CPP injected on the rest day prevents recall of extinction learned under CPP. A, Average percentage freezing to the tone for sal-no-ext (n = 12), CPP-ext (n = 12), and sal-ext (n = 12) groups. Rats were injected before the extinction session on day 1 and also on day 2. CPP-ext rats showed high levels of freezing on day 3, indicating poor recall of extinction memory. B, Percentage rebound of freezing on day 3. The CPP-ext rats were significantly higher than saline-ext rats (**p < 0.001) but were not significantly different from the no-extinction controls. C, Extinction of freezing on day 3 normalized to the first trial block. The rate of re-extinction was similar in both groups, suggesting no savings from extinction learned under CPP.
