Degeneration of LGP axons containing huntingtin aggregates. EM48 immunogold labeling shows three degenerated axons in the LGP of a HD-repeat knock-in mouse at 17 months of age. The axons contain immunogold-labeled aggregates and many dark and swollen organelles, suggesting an association of huntingtin aggregates with degenerated axons. Some of the degenerated organelles have double membranes and resemble mitochondria (arrowheads). InC, synaptic vesicles (arrow) are evident in the degenerated axon. Scale bars, 0.5 μm.
