Graphical representation of suppression of neuronal cell death with antisense oligonucleotides. TUNEL-positive cells in the ipsilateral (IL) and contralateral (CL) sides of the piriform cortex (PC) and basolateral amygdaloid nucleus (Am) infused with CDK4 (top) and cyclin D1 (bottom) antisense (open columns) and sense (closed columns) oligonucleotides 2 d after KA administration. The numbers of TUNEL-positive cells in the ipsilateral side of the piriform cortex were greatly reduced by infusion of CDK4 or cyclin D1 antisense oligonucleotides. TUNEL-positive cells were counted in sections at the 1.4, 2.3, 3.3, and 4.3 mm caudal positions from bregma. The molecular layer of the piriform cortex was excluded from the counting areas.
