Case control status in the 23andMe cohort was self-declared (unverified). The Russian cases and controls were confirmed by clinical examination (CEAP ≥ C2), while the UK Biobank case status was electronically extracted from ICD10 clinical modification codes (I83; varicose veins of the lower extremity). Results from all cohorts were adjusted for age and sex.
