Cell counts are mean ± SE. Immunopositive (PRV-infected) neurons were counted bilaterally in multiple 40-μm-thick tissue sections sampled at 160 μm intervals through the indicated forebrain nuclei. Cell counts were corrected according to the method ofAbercrombie (1946). BNST, Bed nucleus of the stria terminalis; CeA, central nucleus of the amygdala; DMH, dorsomedial nucleus of the hypothalamus; IC, insular cortex; LHA, lateral hypothalamic area; mPFC, medial prefrontal cortex; PRV, pseudorabies virus; PVN, paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus.

F1-a

Uncorrected cell count value (see Results).

*Significantly greater than the P1–P3.5 group (p < 0.05).

**Significantly greater than both the P1–P3.5 and P4–P6.5 groups (p < 0.05 for each comparison).
