The mean counts ± SE of the number of Fos-stained nuclei for the given regions in Experiment 2. For areas VISp down to Subc, these numbers are taken from the standard frame sample area, which is equivalent to 0.43 mm2 (see Materials and Methods). For the remaining areas the counts are for the entire extent of the target region within the selected coronal sections. The mean counts for Experiment 2 are approximately twice those in Experiment 1. This general increase in staining is attributable to the use of a different batch of primary antibody. See Figure 1 for abbreviations.
