β-galactosidase expression in the brainstem of nonlesioned mice 60 d after the injection of LV-LacZ. The number of β-galactosidase-positive cells per 20 μm section was evaluated every 100 μm over a rostrocaudal distance of 3 mm. The center of the facial nucleus was determined and used as a reference point in the four animals (number of cells per section ± SEM).
