Inhibition of protein synthesis exacerbates LY294002-induced death. Sympathetic neurons were maintained in NGF with vehicle alone (0.1% DMSO) or maintained in NGF with LY294002 (50 μm) in the presence or absence of CHX (1 μg/ml). In addition, neurons were deprived of NGF, and all conditions were maintained for 4 d. The cultures were then fixed and stained with toluidine blue, and the number of surviving neurons was counted. Each condition was performed in duplicate in two independent cultures, and error bars represent SEM.
