Location of sampling sites and experimental design. Samples were collected from two regions (Geiranger and Vågå), four micro-topographic positions and four elevational levels representing two alpine belts. Both regions are located above the treeline. The vegetation is characterized by dwarf shrubs, graminoids, lichens, and mosses growing on siliceous bedrock and differs strongly due to micro-topographic features (e.g. Dahl [71])
