Geometry set-up in the GATE simulations: (a) A cluster of 500 spherical non-overlapping nanoparticles (NPs) were randomly distributed in a cubic volume of water (V ≈43 μm3, corresponding to a concentration [Fe] = 0.1 mM) and the maximum NP separation distance (SD) was varied while keeping the volume and concentration the same; (b) 10 of the NPs were modelled as being radiolabeled, with the radioisotope uniformly distributed within a 1 nm wide ring around the iron oxide core.
